As a writer, Rick has published dozens of short stories and non-fiction articles. In addition, he has published a number of novels, all of which are still in print. As an engineer, he worked in the semiconductor industry as a product engineer, device engineer, and parametric test engineer. He also worked in the medical device industry and in aerospace, on a satellite mission control team.
Before starting his writing business, Rick was a product engineer with Freescale Semiconductors, where he supported MEMS accelerometers for automotive safety applications. He was successful at reducing test time, and played an important role as an engineering intermediary between the company and major customers. For automotive safety products, PPAP documents are mandatory. Characterization and qualification reports are standard operating procedure.
Prior to Freescale, Rick held various positions at ST Microelectronics, including device engineer, parametric test, and wafer sort engineer. He broke into the semiconductor industry with Philips (now NXP) as a product engineer supporting ASIC parts. He also teaches the occasional mathematics class at the local community college.
Rick received his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics (double major) from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, and his M.S. degree in engineering from San Jose State University. He has trained with award-winning writers, including Orson Scott Card and David Gerrold. he is a member of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
